WELCOME TO KNAPPINGNEWMEXICO.COM
We are a diverse group of individuals from all over the great state of New Mexico who are drawn to the ancient art of creating arrowheads, knives, atlatl's, spears and many other kinds of tools out of stone the way our ancestors did.
Unless you've been bitten by the knapping bug it is difficult to explain why this is such an intriguing hobby, but after you've learned a few basics it becomes as irresistible as a Rubik's cube. It's sort of like playing chess with mother nature. Each piece of lithic material has a beautiful work of art inside it. Revealing that work of art involves a complex series of flake removal strikes that must be executed with precision, varying the angle and force of each one. One small miscalculation and the whole thing turns into a handful of gravel, but with a little bit of practice the gravel making becomes less frequent as more and more of the works of art begin to emerge.
We meet once a month to learn from each other and share what we've learned. There are not a lot of flint knappers in New Mexico but our numbers keep growing as the revival of ancient skills becomes more popular.
We hope you enjoy the web site and please check back soon as it will always be changing. If you are interested in learning flint knapping or visiting one of our meetings then please contact me at the address below.

Isn't this a great image? Felipe Mendez created this point out of midnight lace obsidian and Juli Fowler turned it into a beautiful work of art.
Juli Fowler has been a hidden talent for a long time. Her prints are mesmerizing on a thought provoking level, while accentuating the beauty of the art she photographs by adding profound graphics. Juli is also an avid flint knapper so she fully understands the degree of skill needed to produce the points she photographs.
Tommy Heflin's amazing work on the stone and George Arms survival knives.

Teresa sent in this link http://www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/White.htm This guy makes arrowheads with a magnifying glass. Some of them are the size of a letter on a dime. Check it out. Talk about conserving knappable materials.
